Cut - Canadian Star Diamond Information

People often confuse the cut of the diamond with the shape of the diamond. However the shape selected is a matter of personal preference. The cut refers to the polishing, proportions and symmetry of a diamond, ultimately determining a stones brilliance and radiance. As a result a well cut diamond is regarded as more beautiful and brilliant and consequently more valuable than a poorly cut diamond. Many experts believe that cut is the key component in selecting a diamond, even more so than color and clarity, because a poor cut diamond will lack the ideal reflection and refraction of a well cut stone and not hold the same brilliance. In order to maximize brilliance, diamonds are cut within a range specified proportions.

Ideal Cut / Excellent Cut – Premier quality which reflects nearly all light that enters the diamond. An exquisite cut, which is only given to less than 5% percent of cut diamonds.

Very Good Cut- Reflects nearly as much light as an ideal cut, however at a lower cost. Approximately the top 15% of diamonds fall within this category.

Good Cut- Reflects the majority of light that enters, commonly use to maximize diamond size. Generally much less expensive than a very good cut, and accounts for approximately the top 25% of diamonds based on cut.

Fair Cut- Still a good quality diamond however primary focus is weigh maximization and not light refraction, hence a fair cut will not be as brilliant as a good cut. Approximately the top 35% of diamond quality based on cut.

Poor Cut- This includes all diamonds that do not meet the performance standards of a fair cut. These diamonds are generally deep and narrow or shallow and wide and tend to loose most of the light out of the sides and bottom.

Canadian Star Diamond sells only diamonds rated from Ideal/Excellent Cut to a Fair cut or better and we do not sell any diamonds that are identified as “Poor Cut”.
